A brief affair in Cochecton

COCHECTON, NY — The Cochecton Democratic Caucus, which occurred on Friday, June 25, was a brief affair.

No nominations were contested. No unexpected nominations occurred. And only one of the candidates nominated was not already serving in their role.

Larry and Peggy Richardson, president and secretary respectively of the Cochecton Democratic Club, served as chairperson and secretary respectively of the caucus process. Mitra Behrozzi, the club’s vice president, swore them in.

The current serving town justices, the Honorable Steve Sauer and the Honorable Craig Fine, were nominated to run again as the Democratic candidates for their positions. Sauer is on his 28th year in his position; Fine is on his 12th.

Eileen Hennessy, the town’s current tax collector, was nominated to run again for that position. She said it was her 17th year in the position, and said that she enjoyed it enough that she wished it were a year-round job.

“We can’t afford those kind of taxes,” joked Fine.

Two positions on the town council were open for election. Current council member Dr. Paul Salzberg was nominated to run again for his seat. And he nominated newcomer Kambri Crews to run alongside him, for the seat currently held by Republican Sean Nearing.

“I’m glad we have two candidates running for town council,” said Salzberg, adding that it was nice not having to run alone.

No nominations were received for the positions of town clerk or highway superintendent, and the club cross-endorsed Gary Maas to continue in the position of town supervisor.
