A trail to try

Posted

Spring has finally sprung, beckoning us outside with its beguiling charms. Taking to a trail is a wonderful way to connect with what’s happening as temperatures climb and daylight lengthens. One interesting option to consider is the long and winding McDade Recreational Trail in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

A pair of mallard ducks was enjoying respite in a small pond. It’s easy to spot the drake due to its distinctive plumage, but can you find the female well-camouflaged in the reeds?

In the Upper Delaware region, you can access the trail at Milford Beach in Pike County, or at additional trailheads between .5 to 5 miles apart along Route 209 paralleling the Delaware River. Most of the trail’s 30-plus miles provide easy to moderate hiking and bicycling along primarily flat terrain, with sweeping views of the river to the east and cliffs to the west. Farm fields and forests are interspersed with occasional former settlements and historic structures. Visit www.bit.ly/mcdadetrail for more information.

If you work up an appetite on the trail, the section closest to our region is just outside the charming town of Milford, which is filled with great restaurants and shops. Leave enough time to visit Grey Towers National Historic Site, the home of Gifford Pinchot, first chief of the U.S. Forest Service and two-term Pennsylvania governor (www.fs.usda.gov/greytowers).
