HIGHLAND, NY — The Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter had its ninth annual Subzero Heroes ice jump at Berean Lake on Saturday, February 9. To participate in the icy jump, heroes had to raise a minimum of $200 to support families living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Ulster County called on the Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue to cut a hole in the frozen solid lake. The plungers were dressed in creative and colorful costumes for the event’s second costume contest. There were winners for best team theme, coolest costume, warmest costume and most original costume.

The Hudson Valley Chapter serves families living with dementia in seven counties in New York, including Sullivan, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester. The first Subzero Heroes in February 2010 had 19 jumpers and raised about $6,000. This year, 75 heroes jumped with the goal of raising $100,000. So far, the event has raised more than $92,000, but fundraising will continue through June 30. Visit www.subzeroheroes.org to make a donation.
