Walking along, I’ve often overlooked them.
They’re small and unobtrusive...I mistook them
For merely a disruption in the ground:
A bit of sandy soil, a hill, a mound...

The tiny creatures that have worked so hard
To fashion such a wonderful facade
Are more astute than most people might guess,
For, far below this portal lies a nest...

A microcosm, amazing and compact
Where every cell and tunnel interacts.
Each has its unique purpose to fulfill:
A miniature world beneath anthills !

One could learn much from such cooperation:
A lesson in the art of dedication
To one another, and to common goals.
Who’d guess so much goes on beneath those holes ?

So many of those intricate creations
Have been a martyr to “civilization.”
We seldom pause to think about the ants
As we tread on their world without a glance !
