LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — It looked like the home-team swatters of Sullivan West (4-9 overall) had the game well in hand after Liberty (3-9) gave up five runs in the fifth frame on Tuesday afternoon, May 25.

But then, top of the seventh, the Indians staged a late-game rally facing a plethora of Bulldogs pitchers, starting off with walks served up to Dylan Nichols and Tyler Black that stacked the deck, followed by Luke Roth’s slasher to the hot corner, which contributed to the Indians posting several late-game runs.

But it was just a bit shy of a comeback, as Sullivan West held out to win the game 8-6, narrowly averting a game that could have easily slip-slided away.

Sullivan West’s Daniel Hemmer pitched 5.1 innings to get the win (allowing two runs, striking out 10), and as the game progressed, a series of home-team hurlers had their day in the sun: Justin Grund, Ryan Sayers and Andrew Hubert.

Hemmer went three-for-four at the plate with two triples and a double; he also scored three runs and posted two RBIs.

Bulldogs’ first baseman Owen Sager drew a trio of walks, scored a run and was credited with an RBI.

The Indians’ Tanner Bury got tagged with the loss but helped his cause by posting two hits and three RBIs.

Before the first pitch, Sullivan West’s senior baseball players were honored in a brief recognition ceremony: Dylan Brockner, Andrew Crandall, Daniel Hemmer, Jason Lowe and Owen Sager.
