HONESDALE, PA — Most folks don’t think of a deer target as a lucky charm, but for the Lady Hornets field hockey team at Honesdale High, it did the trick.

On Saturday, September 4, the home team bench was adorned with a buck target affixed to the end of it, perhaps as a symbolic warning to the Lady Buckhorns of Wallenpaupack Area High School that the Lady Hornets had their mojo on.

Well, at the end of the match it must have worked its magic, since Honesdale (2-0) blanked their rivals 5-0.

The Lady Hornets scored four goals in the opening frame—courtesy of Katy Corcoran, Laney Neu, Claire Campen and Rowan Murray—while in the second half, Jillian Hoey added icing to the victory cake.

Last year, Honesdale posted a 5-7-2 record, and won the District 2 Class 3A championship, the first in the school’s history.

The Lady Buckhorns posted a 10-2 record last season and won their respective district title.

This is Elly Skinner’s fourth season at the helm of the Lady Buckhorns (0-1), which this year are led on the field by captains Scarlett Schratt and Abigail Calabrese, with six seniors on the roster.

Singling out a couple of players, Skinner said, “Scarlett Schratt has a great offense, always gunning for the ball, she’s feisty,” and of Hannah Karp, “Fine skills and great vision on the goal.”

Grace Ruckinger has been with the Lady Hornets field hockey program for three years, and this marks her first season as head coach of the varsity squad, which is composed of a six-pack of seniors, captained by Katy Corcoran, Emma Modrovsky, Nicole Miszler and Rowan Murray.

Asked to define the team’s goals for 2021, Ruckinger replied, “Play our best in each game, leave nothing on the field, and no what-ifs.”
