With Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell set to be sworn in soon as judge, Chief Assistant District Attorney Meagan Galligan announced today that she will run for the DA position. She also said she expects to become the Acting District Attorney on January 1. Her statement is posted below.

"Chief Assistant District Attorney Meagan K. Galligan has announced her intention to seek the position of Sullivan County District Attorney as current District Attorney Jim Farrell takes his oath as Sullivan County Court Judge on January 2. Galligan, a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, has been a member of the District Attorney’s Office since 2009, and has prosecuted some of the most important criminal cases in Sullivan County since that time. On January 1, 2020, Ms. Galligan will become Acting District Attorney, the first woman in the history of Sullivan County to serve in that role and will seek election to DA from that position.

"Galligan has dedicated her career to the safety of the residents of Sullivan County and, over the past decade has established herself as a champion of victim’s rights, prosecuting those who have caused some of the most horrific loss to members of our community. Galligan joined the District Attorney’s Office under retired District Attorney Steve Lungen, after attaining her law degree from Georgetown University. She is pleased to have developed meaningful relationships with our County’s police agencies as prosecutor in charge of matters ranging from pre-arrest investigations, search warrants, and trial and appellate advocacy.

"Galligan said, 'It is a privilege to work on behalf of the people of Sullivan County to make our communities and homes safe. I will continue to advocate for what is right, for what is just, and for the safety and security of each of us who make Sullivan County home. It would be an honor to serve as the first female District Attorney in Sullivan County, continuing the long tradition of public service that is so important to my family.'
