Golfers take a swing at the Catskill Cup

CALLICOON, NY — On Sunday, July 19, the Villa Roma Golf Course hosted the 2020 Catskill Cup, a fundraising golf tournament to benefit the mission of The Arc Sullivan-Orange Counties, NY.

“It’s the big one,” said Joan Glase, the local organization’s director of public relations and foundation, noting this year’s event marked the 25th anniversary of the golf outing, which was sponsored by Relph Benefit Advisors.

The Catskill Cup is one of The Arc Sullivan-Orange’s major annual fundraisers, and all proceeds benefited the more than 2,000 people with disabilities who receive a wide range of services in our area.

According to Glase, this year’s event raised a net amount of approximately $30,000.

The Arc Sullivan-Orange Counties, NY traces its roots back to 1949 when a group of parents in New York City banded together under the leadership of founder Ruth Bennett to form what, in those bygone and less politically correct days, was called the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC).

Today, The Arc New York represents 48 chapters. According to their mission statement, it is the “largest and best-organized advocates for the disabled in the nation.”

As with most things this year, COVID-19 had an impact on the golf tourney: staggered tee-off times, box lunches to go, no raffles, no indoor awards ceremony and masks and social distancing required in the common areas.

The total number of golfers in the Catskill Cup was logged in at 66, down from the usual 100 to 120, once again due to the pandemic.

The Catskill Cup Champions are the first-flight team of Joe Flores, Luis Delacruz, Jerry Williams and Domenic Martinez with a winning score of 57.

The second first-flight team of Brian Starr, Jeff Nober, Brian Anabel and Glenn Herman posted a score of 58.

In third place, with a score of 59, was the first-flight team of Dean Price, Philip Yudts, Chris Johnson and Tom Levinski.

Special contest winners include Steve Drobysh (closest to the pin) and Darren Tetz (longest drive).

Golfing Digest recently called the 6.514-yard Villa Roma Golf Course, built in 1968, a “little slice of heaven.”
