Plastic usage despite common sense

Both wonder and terror are our namesake and birthright. Perhaps, this is the inherent fate of modern culture, to be torn between bias and reform. Our use of disposables heaps a future of anticipated mining for resources amid terraformed mountains of poorly digested trash.

I pray for cost-effective and truly compostable plastics to become mainstream and marketed to the public for home use. Compostable is the only way forward worthy of attention. Presently, I utilize paper, when available. I bring my own shopping bags, too. The lassitude of political will and greed of industrial competition are embarrassments we live with, despite obvious common sense.

Highland compressor is no ‘gift’

I would like to comment on the recent article by Susan Wade, “Eldred officials laud compressor station benefits to seniors,” which quotes school superintendent Dr. John Morgano saying that the compressor station in Highland “was a gift to us.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Any compressor station anywhere on earth burning off toxins and chemicals from filthy fracked gas is an ecological disaster that discharges radioactive compounds and 70 different chemicals into our air. This so-called “gift” operates 24/7, and the toxins can be carried downwind impacting anyone within a six-mile radius of the site, which includes the Eldred Central School.

Should Dr. Morgano wish to be better informed, he can go to The Town of Highland NY Issues and Politics on Facebook and view recent Millennium Pipeline YouTube infrared video taken at the Highland site. We can only hope that as a responsible educator Dr. Morgano is committed to teaching his students the importance of developing strong core values, notably environmental values, and understanding that not everything in life is about making a quick buck—especially from polluters.
