Lady Bears win on a misty field

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — It was one of those late-fall afternoons when the soccer field was shrouded with a misty haze. By game’s end, the mist turned into a cold drizzle, giving notice that winter was just around the next turn of the road.

On Tuesday, October 22, the home team Lady Bears of Tri-Valley took on the Lady Lions of Chapel Field in a non-league girls’ varsity soccer match, that by the final whistle saw the home team post their second win of the year, as the 2019 season of booters draws to a close.

Although the Lady Bears haven’t posted a lot of conquests in the scorebook this year, things were looking up in the opening frame as Jordan Carmody scored the first blood of the match off an assist from Madison Botsford.

But the Lady Lions roared back with a couple of goals to take a 2-1 lead at halftime, as Lillian Brooks and Maggie Quirk scored.

As the mist began to obscure the field of play under lowering clouds, Tri-Valley ruled the game as Carmody aced a PK and Botsford scored from about 25-yards out to win the match 3-2.

The game recorded a couple of firsts for Chapel Field: Michael Lee’s initial year at the varsity helm, and Quirk’s first goal on the varsity squad.

Mary Feusner, Tri-Valley’s long-serving girls’ soccer coach, said of the victory, “It’s our second win… We’ve had a lot of losses and a tie in there too.

“The first 25 minutes, we had the ball in our half [of the field]… we had a little let down in that period. In the second half, in those 20 minutes, I’ve not seen my kids play as well as they did.”

Adding to her thoughts about the final frame, Feusner said, “They were really looking for each other and passing well… they held up very, and shut them out in the second half.”

And with the Lady Bears win, their coach sent her team off the field with a few words of advice: “Change out of those wet uniforms and get something warm in your bellies.”
