HONESDALE, PA — For some folks, home is never far away.

On Monday, January 20, Natasha Hessling returned to her high school alma mater to assist veteran coach Ron Rowe with leading the girls’ varsity team to victory.

While playing the game of hoops at the “Home of the Hornets,” Hessling was part of the team that won numerous playoffs and the PIAA Division II title three times (2012, 2013 and 2015) before graduating in 2015.

“Mr. Rowe asked me to come back,” she said, explaining that her duties include serving as an assistant coach along with Kari Kromko and guiding the players during practices.

Reflecting on her career at Honesdale High, Hessling said, “I played on a really good team… I love the team atmosphere, and unselfish basketball is great to watch.”

After high school, she played as a power forward at Mount Saint Mary College, setting a rebounding record and posting 1,100-some points.

Okay, so what about the game on Dr. Martin Luther King Day?

In the first frame of the Honesdale Lady Hornets (7-11) against the Lady Trojans of North Pocono (10-5), the visitors iced the contest by outscoring the home team 24-9, setting them on their way to a 35-22 halftime lead, despite being outscored 13-11 in the second period.

In the third frame, the Lady Trojans narrowly slipped past Honesdale 12-11. In the final period, Honesdale electrified the home crowd with a brief comeback as they outpaced their opposition 18-15.

But as luck and skill would have it, it was a case of a little-too-late, as North Pocono took the game 62-51 at the final buzzer.

Another deciding factor was established at the foul line, as the Lady Trojans stepped up to the free-throw line 23 times, making 16 of their shots, which added 16 points to their 11-point margin of victory.

Honesdale’s top scorers: Rowan Murray (11 points), Chloe Lyle (10), Katie Ludwig (6), Lydia Grossman (6) and Sophia Goyette (5 points including a 3-pointer).

North Pocono: Jenna Montana (15 points including two 3-pointers), Jenna Beach (14), Carena Colo (13 points including a 3-pointer), Alicia Goldenziel (10) and Samantha Polishan aced a 3-pointer).

Stats from the free-throw line: Honesdale 6/10 (60 percent), North Pocono 16/23 (70 percent).
