HONESDALE, PA — On Tuesday, September 22, just before Honesdale High’s girls’ varsity soccer squad took to the field for the first time this year, the school honored its senior players with a mid-field ceremony called Senior Sport Night Recognition. This followed a similar event, covered in last week’s issue, during which the seniors on boys’ varsity team were lauded.
In introducing the Lady Hornets and their escorting parents, principal Chris Pietruszewski listed a few notable accomplishments of each scholar-athlete, both on and off the field of play.
Courtney Barone was accompanied by her mom, Donna Barone. A three-year member of the team, this season she serves as a statistician. Other interests and activities at HHS and beyond include three years on the boys’ varsity basketball cheer, one year in the high school band and a total of nine years with the local 4-H. At the moment, Courtney is not sure what she plans to do after graduation.
Megan Bidwell has been on the varsity squad for four years and is one of the team’s co-captains. She was escorted by her parents, Amy and Randy Bidwell. Other interests and activities at HHS include four years on student council, NHS, Interact Club, FCA and the Class of 2021 Club. After high school, she plans to enroll in a college nursing program.
Julie Eisele, a five-year veteran of the girls’ varsity soccer program and a statistician this season, was joined by her mother, Polly Eisele. Other interests and activities at HHS include ski club and track & field. In the wake of graduation, she plans to attend college to become an orthodontist.
Abigail Meagher has been on the varsity squad for five years and, this season, is one of the co-captains. She was escorted by her parents Maurice and Tricia. Other interests and activities at HHS and beyond include Saint John’s youth group, track & field, basketball, travel soccer team, NHS and a member of the school’s blood drive committee. Abigail plans to study engineering at a four-year university.
Shannon O’Day has been playing soccer at the Home of the Hornets for six years and is one of the team’s co-captains. She was accompanied by her folks, Mike and Jenny O’Day. Other interests and activities at HHS and beyond include student council, NHS, Interact Club, track & field, Lawson Lifting Chicks, St. John’s youth group and a counselor at Dyberry Day Camp. Upon graduation, Shannon intends to enroll at the Pennsylvania College of Technology where she has been accepted into their physician assistant program. In addition, she has been offered a spot on the Penn State women’s soccer team where, in Pietruszewski’s words, “she is looking forward to her college soccer experience.”
