Lend your voice

In a quick reprieve from the past three columns, in which I explored where privilege lies in our transportation system, I present an opportunity for you to lend your voice toward the aim of equity.

Wayne Tomorrow, a public-private partnership and action/advocacy group that is bringing to life elements of the Wayne County comprehensive plan, has a new survey out. It comes from Wayne Tomorrow’s transportation task force.

This group is exploring ways to increase transportation options for people, recognizing that more alternatives helps increase affordability and adds to the community’s quality of life. The survey only has a dozen questions and can be completed in a jiffy. What’s being considered is shuttle service and walk/bike paths between Honesdale and Hawley along the Route 6 corridor.

This is a big deal, at least for a local landscape nerd like myself. There are many important places in and between these two community centers, yet options to comfortably, conveniently and safely get around without an automobile are limited. Public feedback in this regard creates a pool of actionable data. In turn, that data can guide decisions, grants and policy going forward. This survey is a helpful contribution, as it explores topics like enhanced public transportation service and bike lanes.

If you can spare five minutes to jump into an important conversation, your time will be well spent from the perspective of increasing neighborhood understanding down the line. It’s tough to see what’s around the bend sometimes. Sight distance is certainly added, however, when there are opportunities to discuss important issues. In its own little way, this survey is such a forum.
