The real story behind those statistics

Mr. Barth [who wrote an op-ed for our July 6 issue], clearly a dedicated opponent of domestic energy production and wishful thinker in terms of the capacity of renewables, should refrain from easily debunked fake statistics. All one has to do is follow his links (https://www.eia.gov/dnav/ng/hist/n9140us2a.htm) to disprove his entire letter, since the link directs us to a graph showing 15%-plus increase in natural gas consumption from 2000, let alone the increased output and now-legal exports.

It also shows a steeply trending consumption line we haven’t seen the likes of since the 1950s. He cherry-picked two years of data and created a story to support his world view. Possibly he didn’t think TRR readers would follow the links he shared?

It’s true that locally the American ingenuity that resulted in the shale revolution is spat upon (while being fully taken advantage of), but in most of the rest of the world, it’s an unexpected marvel that reconfigured the world order.
