The Wayne County Historical Society has long treasured this photo of the members of Wayne County’s Last Man’s Club. After World War I, it was very common practice for a group of surviving veterans to purchase a bottle of liquor, usually French cognac, to be passed down until the last survivor drank a toast to his late comrades. The last man in Wayne County’s club was Quintin Murray. In his case, the toast was left undrunk and the bottle of Hennessey cognac inherited by his son Fred, who donated it to the Wayne County Historical Society. Fred Murray currently heads up the group of volunteers who are restoring the Spencer Steam Tractor, another historic relic that will soon be ready to go on display.

From the files of the Wayne County Historical Society. The museum and library are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday through December 28. Closed Christmas Day. Winter hours will be announced shortly.
