Maternal Health Awareness Day

HONESDALE, PA — On Thursday, January 23, Maternal Health Awareness Day, Wayne Memorial’s New Beginnings Birthing Suites staff and the providers of the Women’s Health Center, part of Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers, will have an information display in the pedestrian concourse at the hospital to help women recognize symptoms that could pose a threat to them or their baby—during pregnancy or in the first few weeks afterwards, known as the “4th Trimester.”

The General Assembly of Pennsylvania declared Maternal Health Awareness Day in view of a sobering fact: the number of pregnancy deaths in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control,  has risen almost every year since 1987, from a low of 7.2 deaths per 100,000 live births that year to 16.9 in 2016.

New Beginnings’ staff help birth approximately 450 babies a year. The Women’s Health Center offers obstetric and gynecological care with physicians and nurse midwives. To find out more visit www.wmh.org/givingbirth.

Art and poetry contest for young environmentalists

NEW YORK — The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced the launch of the 34th annual Water Resources Art and Poetry Contest. Second through 12th grade students attending public, independent, charter and parochial schools, and those who are home-schooled, in New York City and in the upstate watersheds, are invited to create original art and compose poetry that reflects an appreciation for New York’s shared water resources.  Entries will be accepted online until March 6.

For this year’s contest, teachers, parents and students can visit www.nyc.gov/dep/artandpoetry to view the contest guidelines and resource materials, submit entries online, see past winners and learn more about New York City water.

Local nonprofit GAIT seeks community support

MILFORD, PA — GAIT Therapeutic Riding Center (GAIT TRC) has 10 horses, most over the age of 20, with the temperament and experience required to help fulfill GAIT’s mission:  Improving the quality of life of children and adults with special needs through equine activities and therapies.

Without generous donors and volunteers, GAIT TRC could not continue connecting horses with people in need. This winter into spring, GAIT TRC hopes that the local community might respond to a special request for donations to purchase the shavings used in the horses’ stalls. Shavings keep horses clean and comfortable through the cold and muddy months of January, February, March and April.  Each bag of shavings costs $6.50.

All financial contributions are greatly appreciated.  Donate at www.gaittrc.org or mail a gift to GAIT TRC.
