Monticello considered for historic designation

MONTICELLO, NY — The Hamlet of Callicoon is a National Register Historic District and so is the Village of Liberty. Now, Monticello boosters are hoping for the same designation for Sullivan County’s largest municipality.

Sullivan Renaissance undertook a historic assessment of the main Broadway business district of the area earlier this year and then created a formal nomination to the National Register. The Village and the county planning department have also been asking the New York State Historic Preservation Office (NYSHPO) to nominate the district for the designation.

“Monticello has a treasure trove of beautiful mixed-use buildings that are worthy of National Historic District designation,” said county legislator Alan Sorensen. “We need to protect these resources for future generations.”

“Including Monticello in the National Register will help preserve the remarkable history of our county seat and enable us to obtain grants to enhance the downtown area,” added legislator Ira Steingart. Steingart and Sorenson represent different parts of Monticello.

The designation as a National Register Historic District would help make renovation and improvement projects eligible for grants and tax incentives.

According to the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, “The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 was passed primarily to acknowledge the importance of protecting our nation’s heritage from rampant federal development. It was the triumph of more than a century of struggle by a grassroots movement of committed preservationists.”
