Monticello man arrested after breakiing bottles over man's head

Monticello Police arrested James E. Martin “AKA Butterball”, age 46, of Monticello, on Thursday 6/28/18. Martin was charged with felonies for Assault in the 2nd degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd degree.

At 8:30 AM this morning, Monticello police responded to a report of a male assault victim at the Broadway Mobil mart in the Village of Monticello. Officers found a 30 year-old Monticello man inside the store, who was bleeding from a laceration to the head. The victim was transported by Mobile Medic Ambulance to CRMC for medical treatment.

Officers reviewed video surveillancewhich showed the victim standing at the store counter, when Martin came up from behind and struck the victim in the head with a bottle of soda. Martin then pushed the victim to the floor and repeatedly punched him about the head and face. Martin then grabbed 2 glass bottles of wine from a display and intentionally smashed them over the head of the victim. Martin then fled the store prior to officers arriving on scene.

Martin was arrested at 4:30 PM Thursday by Monticello police. Martin was arraigned before Town of Thompson Justice Sharon L. Jankiewicz and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail on $20,000.00 bail pending further court action.
