COVID-19 mitigation partnership between WMCHC and summer camps

HONESDALE, PA — Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers (WMCHC) set aside more than $135,000 out of a $900,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC) to offer rapid antigen testing for COVID-19 to area businesses, including members of the Wayne County Camp Alliance. WMCHC will be providing 700 tests to each of 40 camps in Wayne and Pike counties. In addition, WMCHC has added two more vaccination clinics to its calendar to accommodate camps seeking to have their staff inoculated.

“We are committed to helping the community rebound from the pandemic,” said WMCHC Executive Director Frederick Jackson. “The camps have a significant economic impact in our area, and by helping them and other area businesses, we’re contributing to both our region’s overall health and economic wellbeing.”

Antigen testing indicates whether a person is currently infected by detecting antigens, which are fragments of the COVID virus.

GAIT Therapeutic Riding Center chosen for ‘RED Day’

MILFORD, PA — GAIT Therapeutic Riding Center (GAIT TRC) was chosen by Keller Williams Real Estate (KW) for its annual “RED Day,” a day set aside each year to give back to the community through volunteering. This year’s “RED Day,” on May 13, turned out to be a beautiful sunny day to tackle some of GAIT’s spring cleaning that needed to get done. The KW team included Arlene Quirk, Susan Brown, Exio Dominguez, Robert DeGroat, Shaun Burger, Teresa Eckert, Karen Zingone and Sylvia Sirin.

GAIT Executive Director Martha S. Dubensky said, “We are grateful to the Keller Williams Real Estate volunteers for their time, enthusiasm and talents to fulfill a need at GAIT TRC.”

More than $55,000 raised to fight childhood cancer

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — The 10th annual Thunder 102 and 104.5 Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radiothon on May 13 and 14 raised $55,358 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This annual event has raised more than $550,000 to date. During this 26-hour long radiothon, Bold Gold Media were joined by  committee members, sponsors, dignitaries and special guests; this included Marlo Thomas, whose father, Danny Thomas, founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In addition to donations made in the 26-hour event, money was raised throughout the year at events like the Bold Gold Open Golf  Tournament, Virtual Comedy Night and at hundreds of locations throughout “Thunder Country” who sold SUNY Sullivan Boot Cards.

Sullivan Renaissance awards municipal grants

LIBERTY, NY — Sullivan Renaissance announced recipients of the 2021 Municipal Partnership grants to support beautification, code enforcement, healthy community initiatives and environmental stewardship. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 were awarded along with other resources including assistance from the Renaissance Horticulture Crew and support from a Sullivan Renaissance intern.

The 2021 Sullivan Renaissance Municipal Partnership participants are the Towns of Bethel, Fallsburg, Liberty, Mamakating, Rockland and Thompson, along with the Villages of Monticello and Woodridge. Their projects include renovating a town basketball court, constructing a new village park pavilion, beautifying a Route 17 highway exit and beautifying many public spaces. Memorial Day celebration, General Lemnitzer Memorial dedication

HONESDALE, PA — Memorial Day celebrations will begin at 9:45 a.m. with a Naval Memorial Wreath in memory of servicemen and women. A parade will step off at 5th and Main streets at 10 a.m., followed by a ceremony in Central Park at 11 a.m. The opening of a time capsule and placement of a new time capsule will take place at 11:30 a.m. A ceremony will be held at Veteran’s Park on Fair Avenue at 12 noon, and at 1 p.m., the dedication of the Lemnitzer Memorial will be held at 810 Main St. The public is invited to attend all of these Memorial Day activities.

The Lemnitzer Memorial was installed on the grounds of the WCHS Main Museum in the fall of 2020. Due to COVID-19, the memorial has not yet been dedicated. The Wayne County Historical Society (WCHS) has announced that it is honored to work together with a grassroots group of community members to preserve the memory of Four-Star General Lyman Louis Lemnitzer, a Honesdale native who gave decades of his life in service to his country. The planning group, led by Honesdale resident Paula Roos, started its project in the fall of 2019. Other members of the planning group include Wendell Kay, Robert Keen, Stanton Pratt, Albert G. Rutherford and Warren Schloesser.

Rural roads safety

WAYNE AND PIKE COUNTIES — The Wayne/Pike Farm Bureau would like to remind motorists that farmers are returning to their fields this spring. Large, slow-moving farm equipment will be a common sight on rural roads in Pennsylvania, and drivers are asked to use caution and be patient when they approach.

A slow-moving vehicle emblem (an orange triangle with a red border) is located on the back of most farm vehicles to tell drivers that this equipment consistently travels at 25 mph or less. Motorists are asked to reduce their speed and only pass when it is safe to do so. By working together, both farmers and motorists can ensure a safe planting and harvest season.
