Delgado announces ag grant

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Antonio Delgado (NY-19) recently announced a $2.6 million grant supporting the Hudson Valley Agribusiness Development Corporation. This funding will establish a Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) to lend in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties. Delgado voted to pass the CARES Act, which provided the Economic Development Administration with $1.5 billion for economic assistance programs. This funding creates 67 jobs, saves 220 jobs and leverages $2 million in private investment.

“Under the leadership of Todd Erling, the Hudson Valley Agribusiness Development Corporation has helped countless upstate farmers and producers,” Delgado said. “This grant is a sound investment that will create and save hundreds of critical jobs. I was proud to pass the CARES Act, which provided this funding, and will keep working to deliver economic development assistance to New York’s 19th Congressional District.”

Wayne Memorial COVID testing moves

HONESDALE, PA — Wayne Memorial’s COVID-19 testing site at the Wayne County Fairgrounds is moving to the Stourbridge Professional Complex in Honesdale. The fairgrounds site will close Monday, May 31 and reopen the following day, Tuesday, June 1, at the new location, a drive-through at the former Wayne Health Services Pharmacy. Testing is offered weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Prescriptions are required.

Also, Wayne Memorial Hospital Laboratory Manager John Romano said the lab’s Forest City location, inside the Forest City Family Health Center, opened on May 17.  Normal hours, weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will resume.

Romano said the fairgrounds site has been less busy recently, but the main reason to move was impending activity at the fairgrounds itself.

Monticello school gets unprecedented aid increase

MONTICELLO, NY — The Monticello Central School District (MCSD) is slated to receive an unprecedented 8.4 percent increase in state aid for the 2021–22 fiscal year, bringing the total amount to $40.4 million. The increase is attributed to New York State fully funding the foundation aid formula over a three-year period. MCSD hosted a press conference to formally recognize the efforts of Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and NYS Sen. Mike Martucci.

Forty-four percent of the district’s proposed 2021-22 budget will be accounted for by state aid. In comparison, state aid accounted for 39 percent of MCSD’s budget in 2015.

This year’s infusion of state aid enabled the district to produce a proposed budget that reduces the tax levy by 2.06 percent, while maintaining all existing programs and adding a small number of important staff positions.

Monticello residents will vote on the proposed school budget from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 18. More information about the proposed budget is available on the district’s budget webpage.

Publishers to president: use newspaper advertising

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The News Media Alliance and the National Newspaper Association (NNA) recently sent a letter to President Joe Biden, on behalf of their more than 3,700 combined daily and community newspaper members, including the River Reporter, encouraging the administration to use advertising in local newspapers to help build trust and acceptance of vaccines.

“A trusted source of quality information that has been a mainstay in many local communities for decades, or in some cases, centuries, local newspapers are best positioned to counter misinformation and concerns about vaccines with positive messaging,” a press release reads. “By using newspapers for their educational outreach, the administration will build public trust and acceptance of vaccines, as well as provide much-needed support for local journalism at a time when it has never been more important in our daily lives.”
