Canal festival at Lock 31 returns

HAWLEY, PA — Newcomers and long-time residents alike are invited to explore a key part of Wayne County’s history.

The eighth annual Canal Festival will be held Saturday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Delaware & Hudson Canal Park at Lock 31 on Route 6.

The site features the circa-1820s Daniels farmhouse, the D&H Canal, and Canal Lock 31.

This free rain-or-shine event will feature live traditional music by Poison Love from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the Ann Loeb/Mike Baglione band from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be blacksmithing and wood carving demonstrations. Ed Burgholzer will demonstrate early trapping and outdoor skills. Guided history and nature walks will be held

The Living History stage will host Frank Littlebear and the Red Vision Native American history dance team, plus folk musician Dave Matskino.

Several local authors will be signing and selling copies of their books throughout the day.

Food, including grilled meats, sides and home baked goods will be available for purchase.

The D & H Canal is 108 miles long, built over three years largely by hand. The brainchild of the Wurts brothers, it transported coal from their Pennsylvania mines to the Hudson River at Kingston, NY. This 108-lock waterway operated from 1828 until 1898,  when the railroads took over the job of transporting coal. After the canal was closed, it was drained and the canal land was sold and split up.

Now the Delaware & Hudson canal park is a 17-acre park and historic site along the Lackawaxen River. The store is open; COVID-19 guidelines will be followed in the building.

The festival’s schedule of events, list of authors signing books and the park’s map, plus information about the Wayne County Historical Society and Lock 31 can be found at www.waynehistorypa.com.  Hard copies of information are available at the main museum in Honesdale. Reach the historical society at 570/253-3240.
