GLEN SPEY, NY — The Lumberland Town Board decided on February 13 to invest up to $2,000 for its part of this summer’s Sullivan County 50th anniversary celebration of the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

Funding will include the installation and original artistic painting of one of about three dozen large fiberglass doves that will be appearing all around the county on or about Memorial Day.

McKerrell explained that the five-foot-high, seven-foot-long bird figure will need a permanent concrete base and a prominent place for display. Where it will go is still in question. “They’re supposed to go on a Main Street for maximum visibility, but we don’t have a Main Street,” McKerrell admitted.

The county proposed that the doves be painted in the style of famed ‘60s artist Peter Max. McKerrell said area artist Todd C. Anderson has agreed to take on the work. Anderson is to provide drawings of his design to the town before March 1, and complete the project in time to have the finished dove on its pedestal, somewhere in town, by Memorial Day weekend. A $500 Sullivan Renaissance grant will partially fund the project.

In other business, the board: heard planning board member Steve Kosmacher’s queries and Supervisor Jenny Mellan’s explanation about the lengthy ongoing review of the town’s zoning, noted receipt of a new constables’ patrol vehicle, heard fire department president Ann Steimle announce the purchase of a new ambulance and accepted the resignation of supervisor’s clerk Heidi Spannos.

The board approved three resolutions: allowing the Eldred Little League permission to use town fields in Glen Spey and Pond Eddy, certifying the January 15 internal audit of town judicial books, and agreeing to renew the annual $5,100 town contract with Barton & Loguidice for the monitoring and test-well sampling at the former town dump on Kalin-Weber Road.
