Police K9 helps subdue unruly pedestrian

Posted

At 2:25 AM Wednesday, Monticello officers on patrol observed Derik Powell, 29, acting out in an erratic manner on Broadway. Powell was yelling and screaming profanities while on a sidewalk. Powell then picked up a garbage can and threw it into the roadway as the officers patrol vehicle was passing by. Officers then approached Powell and advised that he was under arrest. Officers then attempted to take him into custody. Powell violently struggled and fought with officers attempting to handcuff him. While fighting with officers he broke a mirror on a police vehicle door. Officers then attempted to subdue Powell with a Taser deployment but were unsuccessful. Monticello K9 officer Matthew Rohner arrived on scene and ordered Powell to stop resisting. Powell refused. PO Rohner thenreleased his K9 partner “Deca”. K9 Deca was able to bring Powell to the ground. Powell still continued fighting with officers and was finally subdued with a second successful Taser deployment.

Monticello police arrested Powell of Woodridge, on July 4. Powell was charged with misdemeanors for 2 counts of obstructing governmental administration, criminal mischief in the 4th degree, resisting arrest and the violation of disorderly conduct.

Powell was arraigned before Acting Village of Monticello Justice Leo Glass and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail on $5000.00 cash bail or $10,000.00 secured bond pending further court action.
