The Office for the Aging advocates for the older population of Sullivan County. All the programs sponsored or directly operated by this office are designed to give choices to older people, with the hope that, through these choices, they will be able to remain in their own homes and communities as long as possible. 

The Office for the Aging gives priority for services to those who are frail, low-income and homebound.

The Office for the Aging is made possible by the Sullivan County Legislature, New York State Office for the Aging and the Older Americans Act.

A partial list of services offered:

The Office for the Aging does not deny services to individuals who are unable to make a donation toward any services provided by this office. Contributions enable it to continue and expand programs to other senior citizens.

Caregiver resource center: A joint program of Cornell Cooperative Extension  and the Office for the Aging, it provides programs including respite, support groups and information on and referrals to various services. 

Case management: Case management services are provided to elderly individuals who are unable to negotiate the human-services network without assistance. Designated staff arrange and coordinate the delivery of services needed from several agencies and provide regular monitoring to ensure that the participant’s needs are being met.

Expanded In-Home Services for the Elderly (EISEP): A New York State program funded jointly by state and local funds that assists older people (aged 60 and older) who need help with everyday activities to take care of themselves (such as dressing, bathing, personal care, shopping and cooking), who want to remain at home, and are not eligible for Medicaid. 

Health insurance information counseling: Provides counseling to New York State seniors regarding their health insurance options, including Medicare and the state’s Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage Program (EPIC).

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP): Provides assistance to lower-income seniors to help pay for heating costs. 

Legal assistance: Legal assistance is available to help seniors with problems involving Social Security, Medicare and other benefit programs; landlord/tenant disputes; problems relating to the ownership of property; and problems that are not of a fee-generating nature.

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP): A program connecting people age 55 and over with volunteer opportunities. 

Senior nutrition program: Provides nutritious meals to seniors 60 years and older through a meals-on-wheels program and meals provided at 13 nutrition sites throughout the county. 

Senior transportation program 

Weatherization Referral and Assistance Program (WRAP): Assists seniors with obtaining affordable or free services to weatherize their homes.

Pike County

The Pike County Area Agency on Aging is a public, not-for-profit, senior-service agency, providing resources and services to Pike County residents 60-years old and older. Its mission is to assist them to remain in their home safely while promoting their quality of life. The agency is governed by Pike County Commissioners with guidance by the Area Agency on Aging’s advisory council.

A partial list of services offered: 

Adult day services: Structured activities and health-related services for older adults who are physically or cognitively challenged and who want to remain at home, providing social and mental stimulation, caring for their physical needs and giving their caregiver, usually a family member, a much-needed break.

APPRISE counseling: Counseling for seniors seeking assistance regarding Medicare, available Medicare Supplemental Insurance and prescription drug plans.

Elder abuse prevention: Call 800/233-8911, a 24-hour hotline, to report abuse.

Homebound meal delivery: Nutritious meals are prepared to provide one-third of the daily dietary requirements. Meals are heart-healthy and packaged to ensure appealing nourishment and delivered to eligible consumers in their home.

Information and assistance: The Area Agency on Aging office staff are available to assist you with information and resources to help you make your choices; provides assistance with senior-benefit programs, Social Security, Medicare, eligibility for low-income senior programs including home and community services, along with home-delivered meals, prescription drug programs, healthy-aging programs, case management, senior activities, support groups and volunteering.

Ombudsman services: The agency offers assistance in resolving complaints regarding the quality of care provided to nursing home and personal-care home residents in regard to their health, safety and welfare at the facility.

Personal care: Services include assistance with daily activities that help maintain older persons in their own homes by arranging for an agency that provides aides to assist with bathing, personal care, dressing, grooming and respite care.

Protective services: This service assists individuals who are at risk because of abuse of any kind. Emotional, mental, or physical neglect, even financial exploitation.

Senior center services: The Senior Center provides an opportunity for individuals to socialize and participate in group activities and health promotion such as nutritious, heart-healthy meals; recreation and crafts; education programs and speakers; recreational outdoor activities; and picnics and social events.

Wayne County

The mission of the Wayne County Area Agency on Aging is to act as an advocate to enhance the lives of older adults by promoting independence, empowerment, safety and security through available programs and partnerships.

From the website: “We, as an Agency and staff, envision working with the entire community to advocate for older adults so that they may achieve a better quality of life, while maintaining independence and dignity in their home community. We are committed to concentrating resources of the frail, rural elderly, while recognizing the needs of the community as a whole. We intend to expand services with continued emphasis on quality programs, effective employees and innovative ideas that will enhance the ability of those aging in our community to be educated on the services that are available and make choices that best suit the needs of the individual and the family. We continue to protect adults in danger of neglect, abuse, or exploitation and abandonment.”

Care management: A comprehensive social-services program designed to serve elderly persons in their own homes, to respect the older adult’s right to self-determination, to foster independence and to enhance the quality of life for these most frail members of the community.

Caregiver support

In-home meals: May be available to older adults who are temporarily or permanently confined to their homes.

Ombudsman services: The agency offers assistance in resolving complaints regarding the quality of care provided to nursing home and personal-care home residents in regard to their health, safety and welfare at the facility.

Long-term care assessment

Health Insurance and Financial Counseling: The APPRISE Health Insurance Counseling Program is the Pennsylvania State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which provides counseling for people with Medicare in Pennsylvania.

Protective services: To report elder abuse, call the Area Agency on Aging, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These services are available to help those Pennsylvania residents age 60 or older who are at imminent risk of physical or emotional abuse, abandonment, exploitation, or neglect. Those calling to report elder abuse need not give their name to the Area Agency on Aging. All information is confidential. 

Respite services: Provided to support individuals on a short-term basis due to the absence or need for relief of those non-paid caregivers normally providing care.
