Sleepaway camps won’t reopen in 2020

NEW YORK STATE — NYS Commissioner of Health Howard Zucker remembers going to summer camp. But, he wrote in a June 12 statement, “amid the worst public health crisis in a century, my number one priority is the health and safety of all New Yorkers.”

Which means shutting down those camps for the year.

Day camps are approved to open on June 29, but that won’t help the city youngsters who, every summer, pile on buses and come here.

It can’t be helped. “Overnight camps are a difficult setting to manage social distancing and face covering and infection-control practices,” said Zucker, who earned his MD at 22 and is board-certified in multiple specialties including pediatrics.

Some camps are pivoting to online programs. Others have simply closed. No matter which your preferred camp has done, it’s guaranteed that kids—and their parents—will miss them.
