LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The past is prologue.

Spartacus, described by the Greek essayist Plutarch as “a Thracian of Nomadic stock” was an escaped slave and gladiator who was at the forefront of a slave rebellion against the ruling Roman Republic during the Third Servile War.

On Wednesday, February 12, history repeated itself, as the Lady Spartans of S.S. Seward Institute (14-2) defeated the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs (5-12) in a girls’ varsity basketball game. The combatants traded swords and battle-battered shields on the bloody sands of time—or, in this case, they traded the ball in a battle of hoops on a polished hardwood floor.

The home team hoopsters scored first, but from then on it was a downhill ride; Seward out-paced Sullivan West in all four frames: 24-7, 18-6, 9-5 and 8-7. They plowed down the road to a 59-25 victory at the closing buzzer.

Seward’s Alexa Roach took to the hardwood in search of points; she is in hot pursuit of her school’s girls’ varsity basketball career record of 1,663.

Going into the game against the Lady Bulldogs, she needed 83 points. The way to victory cropped her deficit by a total of 28 points, including two 3-pointers from outside the arc, one of which she drilled in the final seconds of the first half to give her team a 42-13 lead going into the locker room.

Sullivan’s West’s top netters: Keri Burr (8 points, including two 3-pointers, and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line), Brielle Arnott (8 including two 3-pointers), Riley Ernst (6).

Seward’s ‘big three’ accounted for 55 of their team’s 59 points: Alexa Roach (28 points, including two 3-pointers), Shannon Sgambick (15), Josely Medina (12 including two 3-pointers).

Stats from the foul line: Sullivan West 3/8 (38 percent), Seward 5/7 (71 percent).
