Sullivan County’s New Jail readies for transition

MONTICELLO, NY - Members of the media and the general public were invited to attend the official ribbon-cutting ceremony and take a first look at the new Sullivan County jail and Sherriff’s administration facility on old route 17 in Monticello on Thursday.

At an approximate cost of $101 million dollars, the state of the art facility includes 134,000 square feet for the jail, including detention and administration, and an additional 24, 000 square feet for the Sheriff’s administration and road patrol. Construction commenced in 2017 by general contractor Pike Company and is situated on 36.19 acres containing and surrounding the facility.

Chairman of Legislature Luiz Alvarez opened the ceremony and addressed a large crowd, as did several county legislators and and Sullivan County District attorney Jim Farrell. “I want to thank the legislature for making the right decision,” Farrell said. “One of the oldest jails in the state has now been replaced by one of the newest” he added, referring to the existing  facility, some of which is over 110 years old. Echoing the sentiments of Sheriff Mike Schiff, Farrell went on to say that, “The working conditions of the people that are out there investigating crime, the people who protect us, the men and women who are making sure that we [the public] are safe, now have an appropriate place to work and do their craft. That’s exactly what this world class facility will do for many, many years to come.”

While construction is complete, both inside and out, it will take several months to train personnel and the NYS Commission of Correction must inspect and approve the new jail before inmates can be transferred, anticipated some months down the line in 2020. The current jail and Bushnell building will be demolished.
