MONTICELLO,  NY — Sullivan County Legislature on July 14 unanimously approved the return of the final furloughed clerk in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Office, effective August 3.

“Our intent is that our local DMV Office be fully staffed so that a tremendous backlog of transactions can be addressed,” said legislature chairman Robert A. Doherty. “I thank people for being (and continuing to be) patient, but our citizens have understandably been stressed and frustrated by the inability to timely obtain licenses, registrations, plates and renewals.”

“Even with the limitation of appointments to Sullivan County residents, our DMV employees cannot keep up with thousands of requests,” explained county clerk Russell Reeves, who oversees DMV. “I thank the legislators for continuing to lift the furloughs so that my office can begin to return to normal operations.”

Drop boxes continue to be available solely for registration renewals and plate surrenders.

The DMV Office is taking in-person visits by appointment only. Customers can call 845/794-3872 to schedule an appointment, but operators are extremely busy helping customers and may not be able to answer at that moment. Messages cannot be left at this number – only appointments made with a live operator will be accepted. Walk-ins without an appointment will not be serviced at DMV during this time.

All business, whether by dropbox or appointment, is limited to Sullivan County residents only.

“We continue to ask for the public’s patience while we address all the transactions that have been delayed due to DMV’s three-month closure,” Reeves stated.
