MONTICELLO, NY — Sullivan County on March 24 confirmed that there are now 35 confirmed cases if COVID-19 in the county.

"Assume community transmission is widespread, regardless of where you live," Public Health Director Nancy McGraw said. "But you can greatly limit your risk by staying at home, regularly washing your hands with soap and water, and calling your healthcare provider or hospital if you have a fever, cough and/or shortness of breath."

Sullivan County's Public Health Services Call Center (292-5910) and Emergency Community Assistance Center (807-0925) continue to be staffed during weekdays, and voicemails left after hours will be answered as soon as possible.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said at briefing on March 23 that the state got permission from the federal government to conduct tests on March 13, prior to that the federal government was conducting all of the tests and that created a bottleneck. Cuomo said, “In ten days we’ve gone from testing 1,000 people per day to 16000 people per day.  That’s more than any other state, that’s more per capita than South Korea which as the gold standard for testing. They were doing 20,000 per day on a population about double the population of New York.”

He said the expanded testing will result in a high number of positive cases. He also ordered all hospitals to increase their numbers of beds by 50 percent
