Sullivan legislature reorganizes

MONTICELLO, NY — There were two names put forward to become the new chair of the Sullivan County Legislature at the government center on January 14: Joe Perrello received four votes from his colleagues, Rob Doherty received five. Doherty was then sworn in as the new chair by newly-sworn-in county judge Jim Farrell.

Legislator Michael Brooks was unanimously voted in as vice-chair.

The current legislature is made up of seven Republicans and two Democrats, but during closing comments several legislators said they expected everyone to work well together, as the last group of legislators had.

“As a minority leader with this last legislature, the Republicans still had a majority, we worked great together. On a local level, party politics aren’t important, we’re not dealing with those issues, and the county is heading in a great direction,” Democratic legislator Ira Steingart said.

Legislator Alan Sorensen welcomed the four new members of the legislature and thanked everyone for the support he and his family received from the legislature and the community over the recent tragic loss his son Christopher.
