River hamlets celebrate with community gatherings

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY — Fifty performers played on iconic porches in Callicoon, while honey and all things bees were feted in Narrowsburg. The two riverfront hamlets, located 13 miles from each other, were jam packed with people and the spirit of community on Saturday, September 25.

Porchfest organizer Irene Nickolai was thrilled with the experience. “We are excited about the great turnout in town and being able to showcase all the talent in the area,” she said. “All musicians donated their time in support of the community. Businesses were very happy with the boost in business which almost surpassed Labor Day.” And, rather to the point this soggy summer, “The weather was amazing—could not be better!”

Honeybee Fest organizer Joan Santo said, “It was a little taste of honey this year—short and sweet. The purpose of the festival is to bring awareness to the importance of pollinators and to help educate the community about the decline in our bee populations. This year, with a demonstration hive on display, even the local bees showed up, which was a great educational experience. It’s all about a healthy bee population and bringing the community together.”
