Miss Grasshopper, engaged in song
All summer long,
With wonder found herself deprived
When the winter storms arrived.
Alas for her, she’d not put by
Even a speck of worm or fly
“I’m hungry,” was the plaintive chant
To her neighbor Mrs. Ant.
“Lend me just a bit of grain.
I will pay you back again
Completely and with interest too
Well before the loan is due.
I give my solemn creature’s pledge.”
Such language set Ant’s teeth on edge.
This beggar took her for a friend!
(Besides, she didn’t like to lend.)
“How did you earn your livelihood.”
She queried, “when the times were good?”
“In happier times I liked to sing.
You don’t begrudge me such a thing?”
“You liked to sing? Well, good for you.
Now you can take up dancing too,”
