They gathered together in Lumberland

GLEN SPEY, NY — Just as the first Thanksgiving, they gathered together to ask for blessings, give thanks, consume turkey and the trimmings in large quantity and bask in the glow of community.
Area residents came to the Lumberland Town Hall to partake of the community dinner on the afternoon of Thanksgiving. The hall was festively decorated, the food was hot and delicious, the conversation flowed freely.

The annual event was spearheaded by Kezia LaBuda of Glen Spey and her cadre of volunteers, including Eldred High School students who gathered the evening before to set the tables and also to bake many of the delicious desserts that were available.

Now in its sixth year, the event continues to attract new attendees. The first year, much of the area was impacted by snow and icy conditions which kept people off the roads. But the dinner was a blessing to a number of utility workers in the area as they came in for a hot meal and warm smile while they were away from their families, and to receive thanks for their power restoration efforts.

The buffet meal includes all of the traditional fixings: turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, yams, green beans, cranberry sauce and other side dishes, as well as an array of desserts. All of the food is prepared by volunteers.

In attendance were young families, older folks, single folks and even some area passers-throughs. LaBuda said that there are some misconceptions regarding the purpose of the meal. It is not limited to economically disadvantaged residents. There is no charge to attend and the event is open to all.
Although costumes are optional, Yulan residents Debbie and George Kane came garbed in Pilgrim outfits, looking very much like they could have participated in the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621.
