Tonkin announces criminal sentences in Pike

Pike County District Attorney Raymond J. Tonkin announced the following criminal sentences were issued by Pike County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Gregory Chelak during the week of July 13, 2020:

Andrew Shawn Powell, age 31, of Carbondale, PA, was sentenced to 13 months to 60 months in a state correctional facility and fined $1,300.00 for the crimes of Unlawful Contact with a Minor, Indecent Exposure and Possession of a Controlled or Counterfeit Substance. Between August and September of 2019, Powell used a cell phone from his residence in Palmyra Township to contact a minor child to solicit sexual activity. Using his cell phone Powell sent lewd images of himself to the minor. When Powell was taken into custody, he was found in possession of Marihuana.

Lamel Anthony Cooks, age 33, of Scranton, PA, was sentenced to 12 months less 1 day to 24 months less 1 day in the Pike County Jail followed by 2 years of probation and fined $1,500.00 for the crimes of Simple Assault, Defiant Trespass, Disorderly Conduct and 2 counts of Harassment. On December 26, 2018, Cooks entered a residence in Lackawaxen Township when he was told to leave and struck an individual multiple times in the face and torso causing injury during a dispute over money.

Kim Alison McHale, age 60 of Hawley, PA, was sentenced to 15 days to 6 months in the Pike County Jail, fined $600.00 and had her driver’s license suspended for 12 months for the crimes of Driving Under the Influence and Possession of a Small Amount of Marihuana. The state police stopped McHale on August 29, 2019, for following too closely while traveling along SR 6 in Palmyra Township. When contact was made with McHale, the trooper detected the smell of an alcoholic beverage and Marihuana. McHale admitted to the trooper that she had been drinking prior to driving. Feld Sobriety Tests indicated impairment and a breath test confirmed a blood alcohol content of .089%. McHale was also found in possession of Marihuana.

James Newell Barnum, age 24, of Dingmans Ferry, PA, was sentenced to a $300.00 fine for the crime of Possession of a Small Amount of Marihuana. The state police stopped Barnun for an inoperable brake light at the intersection of Milford Road and Rosewood Lane on August 18, 2019. When speaking with Barnum, the trooper detected the smell of Marihuana. Barnum admitted that Marihuana had been smoked in the car earlier. A probable cause search revealed Marihuana.

Christian Alexander Candelario, age 20, of Slate Hill, NY, was sentenced to a fine of $300.00 for the crime of Possession of a Small Amount of Marihuana. On September 28, 2019, Candelario was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped at a sobriety check point being run by Eastern Pike Regional Police Department at the intersection of First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Matamoras. The smell of Marihuana was detected in the vehicle and a probable cause search revealed that Candelario was in possession of Marihuana.
