WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, NY — The Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County will hold its annual coyote hunt from February 7 to February 9 this year. The club’s president Jack Danchak said he’s not yet sure how many hunters will participate, but last year the total was 644. He said the height of hunter participation was in 2010 when there were 1,066 participants.

Any NY hunter can participate, as can hunters in six counties in Pennsylvania. However, in order to be eligible for the up to $10,000 in cash and prizes offered to winners, the hunters must bring their coyotes to the weighing station at the White Sulphur Springs fire house.

Danchak said he has not heard from any animal rights activists who might object to the hunt. He said his organization follows the laws and works with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to ensure everything is done properly.

Hancock cancellation

A coyote hunt scheduled for January in Hancock sponsored as a fundraiser by the Hancock Fire Department was cancelled after a petition drive on Change.org. The petition read in part, “These are firefighters whom children look up to as heroes. What are they teaching our children when promoting events that kill animals for money and fun? Shameful.”

The department issued a statement at the time: “Organizations and individuals for the protection of animal rights have been continuously harassing the Hancock Fire Department and our members, including threats against our personal safety. This harassment has gotten to the point where it is blocking us from being focused on our main mission, which is firefighting and saving lives.”

After the cancellation, another coyote hunt was announced by the Whitney Point Coon Hunters Club in Broome County. It was held on January 18 and January 19, the same week the Hancock hunt was to be held.
