Born 1875. Descended from early Pilgrims. One of seven sisters. Born in a log cabin in Branch, NY, Town of Denning, Ulster County. Married to Andrew George, son of German immigrants. Mother of five daughters.

She began keeping a journal in 1929 at age 54.  Her journals chronicled her family: their daily life on a farm, the beauty of her surroundings, her religious beliefs and real-life happenings in the surrounding area. One might read a vivid description of the clothes she and Andrew wore at their wedding, the beauty of their surroundings along the Rondout Creek or a comment about the ugliness of the outhouses in Grahamsville.

In April of 1929, she wrote, “There is talk again of the dam coming here. It is very unsettling and must be borne I suppose.” (This did happen just a few years later. More than 1,200 residents in the Upper Rondout Valley lost their homes.)  

Another notation says, “made a delicious squirrel pie for supper.”  The next day she writes, “Why must a woman always be chained to her kitchen?  But we forged these chains for ourselves and they are stronger than we are!”

Juliana continued her writing through much of her lifetime. One can feel the sadness and the joy of a family through World War II. A daughter was lost in the 1930s; weddings, births and deaths are chronicled; and the weather is reported. Her journals show the mundane and the beauty and the day-to-day happenings of a farm life along the Upper Rondout Creek.
