Henrietta D. Pierce, of Cochecton, NY, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2024.

The wife of Melvin Pierce, who predeceased her in 1995, she was born on September 23, 1928 in Cochecton Center, NY, to Annie Thone Daub and George Daub. Etta was also predeceased by her brothers Fritz and Carl Daub; and her four sisters, Ann Rutz, Clara Meckle, Elizabeth Walters and Helen Bernas; along with brother-in-law Edward Pierce (Katherine) and sister-in-law Julia Palmer (Charles); and several nieces and nephews.

Etta was a graduate of Narrowsburg Central School and Albany State University. She began her teaching career at the White Lake School and also taught at Narrowsburg Central School. In 1959, Melvin and Etta founded Cochecton Oil Company and together they operated the business until 1993.

She most enjoyed having her family and friends gather for holidays, Sunday dinner or at one of her favorite spots, the boathouse on Lake Huntington. Etta was a great cook, baker, quilter and crocheter. She enjoyed playing cards and the piano and watching a great baseball or basketball game.

Etta was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Lake Huntington, NY, where she was the organist and played for 55-plus years. Active in many organizations, she was a past member of the Lake Huntington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary; a charter member of the Cochecton Volunteer Ambulance Corps; and a member of the Women’s Community Club of Cochecton, Lake Huntington Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America, The Cochecton Preservation Society and Senior Volunteer at the Lake Huntington Nutrition Site. Her tireless community service earned her twice The Sullivan County Senior Citizen Volunteer of the Year award.

Surviving are her Children Ann Smith (Bob), Susan Couture (Bob) and Peter Pierce (Norma); Grandchildren Benjamin Smith (Danielle), Kathryn Marsh (Paul), Michael Pierce (Taylor), Patrick Pierce (Krysten); and Great-grandchildren Margaret Ann Marsh, Anthony Robert Marsh and Simone Rae Leonardsmith.

Special recognition to Linda Rotundo for her tireless care and compassion shown over the past three years.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 9 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home West Street at Buckley, Liberty, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Lake Huntington, NY. Father John Kennady will officiate.

Burial will be in the Cochecton Center Cemetery, Cochecton.

Contributions in Henrietta's name can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
