Lilly Pulitzer started a fruit juice stand because she needed a renewed sense of purpose.

She had moved to Palm Beach, Florida in search of love and adventure and immediately embraced the bohemian, barefoot lifestyle filled with lots of friends and endless parties.  But life was not quite as sunny and it was recommended by her doctor that Lilly become passionate about something outside of herself.

Orange juice became her thing. But hand-squeezing orange juice wreaked havoc on her clothing and she turned to a designer friend to create a fabric print that would camouflage the citrus stains.  The designer friend complied and soon Lilly was selling more dresses than juice. She started her women's clothing company in 1959. The company took off in earnest when her friend Jackie  Kennedy came to Palm Springs and donned one of the casual shift dresses. The rest, as they say, is history.

Some people say fake it 'til you make it. Lilly said,  "Despite the forecast, live like it's spring.
