"In the Summertime" harks back to Mungo Jerry's lead singer Ray Dorset's experience of summertime in Hampshire with his extended family. It reached number one in charts around the world, debuting on May 22, 1970.
According to Dorset, it took about 10 minutes to write the lyrics as he took a break from his day job at a Timex laboratory. With no percussion in the band, the group utilized a jug band approach and created tracks that added great appeal to the hit.
