JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Sullivan West celebrated May Day 2019 with a triple dual track and field meet on Wednesday, hosting a ‘triple header’ between the home team Bulldogs thinclads versus their local rivals in high sports, the Eldred Yellowjackets and the Runnin’ Raiders from Port Jervis.
May Day dawned with a chilly overcast, and that cool weather hung around until later in the afternoon, causing several of the scholar athletes to forsake their traditional spring attire for warmer wraps.
At the end of the day, each school competed against the other, and the results were tallied in both boys and girls events.
Boys: Sullivan West versus Eldred (SW 112, ELD 31), Sullivan West versus Port Jervis (PJ 98, SW 39), ELD versus PJ (PJ 116, ELD 21).
Girls: Sullivan West versus Eldred (SW 119, ELD 16), Eldred versus Port Jervis (PJ 95, ELD 39), Sullivan West versus Port Jervis (SW 77, PJ 55).
There are rare moments that stand out to a shooter and scribbler of high school sports.
In the boy’s 800m, Port Jervis’s Harry Tomasi gave an all-out effort to finish in first place, only to collapse onto the track at Sullivan West’s Community Athletic Complex, and later be comforted in the arms of a team mate.
After all was said and done, it was an afternoon that really defined the meaning of perseverance, dedication and the will to overcome.
