For the second time in as many months, the millions Infinite Care owes Sullivan County came up at the Health & Human Services meeting—and was again quickly dispatched, shrouded behind some need to pooh-pooh discussion over why since 2021 the county’s de facto operator of our Adult Care Center has yet to pay what it owes, despite growing concerns over the quality of care it’s providing.

Legislator Perrello issued his scolding over the mention of the arrears, estimated by the county manager at $1 million per quarter, as he side-stepped Infinite’s continuing failure to make good. The amount in arrears indicates the county’s financial situation at the care center fared at least as well, if not better, before being transferred to Infinite—a wound rubbed raw for Perrello, perhaps because he helped enable the transfer last session.

Nonetheless, in the fall several legislators campaigned to support the care center, leaving voters wondering now whether they’re looking to have it both ways in a relationship with Infinite appearing unsound.  Chairwoman Rajsz, in particular, also enabled the transfer earlier on with Perrello and others, yet in her October debate repositioned herself: “I believe it is time for us to take back the Adult Care Center, dispense with the LDC so that we don’t have to pay the taxes… and provide care to our residents who cannot care for themselves… the Adult Care Center and the residents there need our help.” See 19:20-20:44@ www.midhudsonnews.com/2023/10/15/sullivan-county-legislature-district-2-debate-video/

For a child when the music stopped, it was great fun moving around the chairs, but Care Center residents aren’t props in a game.
