Pontier, Pizzolato showed courage

I read with interest your article about Glenn Pontier being selected for deputy supervisor. Two things came immediately to my mind.

The first was the high quality of journalism that was featured in your paper, a true public service demonstrating the value of a local news outlet.

The second was the bravery of Glenn Pontier and the supervisor who selected him. I’ve known Glenn Pontier since before his refusal to cooperate with the draft. To the best of my knowledge, Glenn’s actions and decisions were guided by his moral and religious convictions.

It’s not easy to take an unpopular stance, and as I read in the article his decisions are still impacting his life. However, his actions were based upon his belief that the killing of other people is wrong. He could have taken the easy path, but instead chose a path that led to imprisonment and other serious consequences to his life, not for personal gain but in furtherance of his deeply held beliefs in the sanctity of human life.

In my book, his actions and the courage of the supervisor to hire and defend him are what heroism is all about: doing what is right and decent when it’s not easy.

To the Veterans who in a very respectable and dignified manner objected to his appointment, I would say that Glenn’s strong moral compass will make him a formidable ally for you, and I thank you for your service to our country.
