NEW YORK — The first Powerball jackpot of the new year, while won in Michigan, brought a combined $45 million for New York public schools and New York Lottery retailers.

The Powerball jackpot rolled 35 times before the winning ticket was drawn on New Year’s Day. In New York State, Powerball ticket sales totaled $109.6 million during the run. All New York Lottery profits from sales are constitutionally dedicated to New York’s K-12 public schools, totaling $38.4 million for this most recent roll. Commissions on Powerball sales paid to retailers across the state totaled $6.6 million.

New York’s schools and small businesses win every time a lottery ticket is purchased, said Gaming Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer. “The millions of dollars generated with every jackpot underscore the significant role the New York Lottery plays in supporting public education and retailers across the state.”
