Scranton officer remains in critical condition

SCRANTON, PA — Detective Kyle Gilmartin of the Scranton Police Department was shot in the head twice on January 12 but is recovering slowly.

The Pennsylvania State Police at Dunmore said Scranton police officers had been responding to reports of shots fired at residences in the Scranton Hill and South Scranton sections of the city. When officers found the suspect in an unoccupied, parked vehicle, the suspect opened fire, shooting Gilmartin in the head.

Aiden Gabriel Deininger, 20, of Old Forge, PA, was charged in Lackawanna County on January 17 with three counts of attempted homicide of law enforcement officers, criminal homicide, and other charges. An investigation revealed that Deininger was in the company of Jeremiah Cleveland, 19, of Mayfield, PA, who was taken into custody on January 12.

On TikTok, OfficerGlick described the shooting and what happened to Gilmartin afterward: “As they parked in the area to begin their investigation, the 20-year-old perpetrator approached their vehicle and shot multiple rounds into their car at point blank range. Kyle was struck twice by the gunfire, as his partners exited the vehicle and returned fire at the subject. He was hit by the retuning fire and was placed immediately into custody. Kyle was placed in the back of a patrol car and rushed to a local hospital with injuries that most would say are unsurvivable. However, I am happy to announce that Kyle has beaten those odds and thus far has had a remarkable recovery. Although listed in critical condition, he is stable and has a very long road of recovery ahead of him. Kyle’s wife, family, friends, and his entire department are asking for your prayers. So let’s spread his photo far and wide, make sure everyone on social media is aware of his sacrifice and his story.”

On January 18, Governor Josh Shapiro visited Gilmartin at Geisinger Community Medical Center. The officer’s injuries are life-threatening, while the suspect’s injuries are not.

EB Jermyn FOP Lodge 2, the Scranton Police Union, has established a GoFundme to assist Gilmartin and his family as he recovers from his injuries. Donations may also be made by check payable to the Scranton FOP Wellness Fund and mailed to EB Jermyn FOP Lodge 2, 401 Railroad Ave, Scranton, PA 18505.
