MONTICELLO, NY — Elected officials from the town, county and state level gathered on May 16 for the unveiling of the Woodstock Way sign on Route 17B in Monticello. The county is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Festival.
Sullivan County Historian John Conway said, “I think it’s important that we think a minute at how utterly inconceivable it would’ve been, not that many years ago, to think about this many people gathering, including county officials, to honor and celebrate the notion of Woodstock. Because, for so many years, while the rest of the world was celebrating that legacy and in some cases profiting from it, here in Sullivan County we did the best we could to hide from it.”
