NEW YORK, NY— Peggy Morris from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed to the River Reporter that a 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in New Jersey and was felt in the Northeast Friday at 10:23 AM.

Was that wind? A big truck passing? Am I going crazy?

No, it was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that originated in Califon, New Jersey, near Whitehouse station with effects felt all along the Delaware on both the New York and Pennsylvania sides.

Residents in Wayne, Pike, and Sullivan counties quickly reported they felt the ground shaking. The USGS report shows the quake could have been felt by as much as 48 million people.

The Upper Delaware Network, a community email chain, lit up with discussion.

“Did anyone else feel an earthquake in the Barryville area about 10:20 am this morning?”

“We are in Beach Lake & felt it!”, responded a user.

Followed up by another member who said “Yes!! I'm working from home today in Newfoundland PA - the southern tip of Wayne County and I felt it, too!!”

A resident of Tusten told the River Reporter he thought the shaking was from a helicopter. “I looked outside but didn’t see one.”

The Narrowsburg Union, which was formerly the Narrowsburg Central Rural School until 2001 and built in 1931, reported that they didn’t feel anything inside the building.

Someone in the town of Callicoon said it shook their bed and woke them up.

Multiple people in towns along the river thought a large truck was passing.

At 12:59 PM NYS Emergency Management sent out an alert saying:

“An EARTHQUAKE occurred in New Jersey. The earthquake has been felt throughout NY State. Aftershocks may occur. CALL 9-1-1 only if you or others are injured or have an emergency.”

Governor of New York Kathy Hochul said that New Yorkers are not accustomed to earthquakes and urged everyone to continue to take it seriously.

According to USGS data this was the largest reported earthquake in the area in the last 50 years.

This is a developing story. The River Reporter will update with new information
