Bridge over Delaware gets rehab money

MATAMORAS, PA — The bridge over the Delaware River at Matamoras has been awarded $980,000 in federal funding.

It’s for a project to rehabilitate the bridge on State Route 6 (Pennsylvania Avenue), a two-span, steel truss bridge built in 1939. The bridge deck will be replaced with a new, reinforced concrete deck, along with minor steel and structure repairs as necessary.

Some 17,478 vehicles cross this bridge daily.

The money was obtained by Matt Cartwright (PA-08), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, as part of $15.35 million in federal funding headed back to Northeastern Pennsylvania. It was part of the 2024 government funding package that passed the House on March 29 and was signed into law the next day.

“We’re happy to hear that Congressman Cartwright was successful in securing funds for these critical bridge and highway projects in the Pocono region,” said Alan Baranski, NEPA Alliance Vice President of Transportation Planning. “The rehabilitation of Route 6 over the Delaware River will ensure this critical bridge continues to safely serve the residents, commuters and visitors of Matamoras Borough and Pike County. These funds will greatly help meet project costs and scheduling challenges.”
